Granda Robb!
Today would've been his 99th birthday. 10th March, 1926, he was born.
1 of 17. And as of today, there's only 1 remaining.
I was extremely close to him. My hero. Taught me so much. And when he left us, i was broken.
I'll never forget waking up early for work on the 2nd Jan, 2008 and seeing the missed calls from Dad on my phone. I knew exactly what it was about, and hearing the words 'your granda's passed away' was like the sharpest of knives piercing through my stomach. Or at least, what i imagine it to be.
The last 10 years of his life, we lived with the daily heartaches of a loved one with dementia.
Maybe you've had some experience of it in your family and if so, you'll know what it's like. If you haven't, i'm sorry to tell you, there's a good chance you will at some point.
I've thought for some years now i'd do something to mark his 100th birthday.
A 100 mile run in 24hrs.
Then this week, leading up to his birthday, i thought i'll do it for charity. And i'll give myself a year to get organised.
I'm unsure of the charity as yet. I know it won't be one of the large charities where 99% of the money goes to marketing, the ceo's 500k/salary and all the other bullshit, with 3p from every £ actually going to where you think it's going!
I want to see the money go straight into the hands of the people, and see it go to good use, somewhere in the daily lives affected by dementia.
So if you've any ideas, let us know.
I'm going to aim for £50k. I've no idea if i'll get anywhere near that, but it's the first figure which came in to my head.
I'll give myself 24 hours, on March 10th, 2026 to run 100 miles. 4.16 miles each hour. We'll confirm a route in due course, starting from the Auchenblae cemetary.
